Abstract: A historic seaside retreat on the East Coast is causing a stir.

This five-bedroom home in Edenton, North Carolina, is one of the oldest in the area and it has just come on the market for $799,000.

It is a superb example of an 18th century gambrel-roofed house, probably built between 1775 and 1800, originally a one-and-a-half storey hall house with a three-storey facade, with a fourth storey probably added a generation later.

However, one of the most intriguing aspects of the house's long history is that it was not always situated on the 1 acre of land it currently sits on.

Originally built on farmland 12 miles away, the house was moved and then extended in 1972.

Each owner has honoured its history in the updating and it feels very true to its roots with the conveniences of modern architecture.

These conveniences include recent updates to the kitchen and bathrooms, as well as a dock and covered boat lift with access to the open water of Albemarle Sound.

This is a sailor's paradise with easily navigable waters, ideal for fishing, swimming and water sports.

But it is not just the proximity to the beautiful Albemarle Sound that makes this property so appealing.

The historic architecture of the residence is reminiscent of colonial Edenton.

The 3,000 square foot layout includes formal living and dining rooms, five bedrooms, 3.5 baths, and a large fireplace.

The property is approximately one hour south of Chesapeake, Virginia, two hours from Raleigh, North Carolina, and four hours from Washington, D.C.

Edenton was the first capital of colonial North Carolina and remains an active, quaint village reminiscent of small-town America of yesteryear.
